Beaufort Journalism is a Lowcountry-based media and digital strategy practice dedicated to strengthening local storytelling and building sustainable community media. We believe strong communities need strong local media, and everything we do, from editorial and education to podcasting and digital strategy, is rooted in that belief.
Beaufort Journalism is a Lowcountry-based media and digital strategy practice dedicated to strengthening local storytelling, supporting community organizations, and building sustainable media in the place we call home. We work at the intersection of journalism, cultural preservation, civic engagement, and digital strategy, partnering with the organizations and people who make Beaufort worth writing about.
Our work spans editorial, education, podcasting, digital strategy, and community building, with partners including Historic Penn Center, the University of South Carolina Beaufort, The Island News, Lowcountry Weekly, Beaufort Digital Corridor, and a growing network of Lowcountry organizations and businesses.
We believe strong communities need strong local media. That means telling the stories that matter, teaching the next generation of journalists and communicators, and helping the organizations shaping our region share their work with the world.
Founded by Beaufort native Sasha Horne Hirshout, The Beaufort Journalism Project grew out of a deep commitment to the Lowcountry and the people who call it home. A College of Charleston graduate, Sasha earned her master's degree from Georgetown University in 2010, the same year she was named a recipient of the CNN Graduate Fellowship. She is the founder of The Beaufort Blog, Lowcountry Moms, and the Lowcountry Creators Club, and co-host of the Lowcountry Explorer Podcast. She teaches communications at USCB and serves as Communications Director of the Junior Service League of Beaufort. Beaufort Journalism is MacArthur Foundation supported through Tiny News Collective.
